Cinnamon and sultana swirls made with gluten free Jus Rol pastry

One of the foods I miss the most since becoming Coeliac and milk intolerant is anything made from pastry! Croissant’s, pain au chocolats, cornish pasty’s, sausage rolls, cinnamon swirls – you name it, I used to love it! So today I decided to try making my own pastry based cake using the Jus Rol gluten free puff pastry which I picked up from the freefrom fridge section in my local Tesco. I know it’s kind of cheating using ready made pastry but it saves an awful lot of time and messing around! I decided to go for cinnamon and sultana swirls and was surprised at how easy they were to make! They are gluten and dairy free and taste incredible.

Scroll down for the recipe!

Ingredients:

1 pack of Jus Rol gluten free pastry

100g coconut sugar (can also be substituted for light brown sugar)

2 tsp cinnamon

60g sultanas

1 beaten egg to glaze (can also be substituted for non dairy milk to make them vegan)

25g dairy free butter

Icing sugar + water

Method:

  1. Remove your Jus Rol pastry from the fridge 5 minutes prior to starting.
  2. Preheat your oven to 190 degrees C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. You will need to work quickly once you unroll your pastry, so make sure all of the ingredients are already measured out and in bowls ready to use.
  4. Unroll your pastry and brush with the dairy free melted spread.
  5. Combine your coconut sugar and cinnamon and cover the entire top surface of the pastry with a thin layer of the mixture.
  6. Evenly sprinkle your sultanas over the sugar.
  7. Its now time to roll your pastry. Start from the short edge and roll until it looks like a swiss roll!
  8. Cut your pastry roll into 8 swirls (Or however many you can get from your pastry!).
  9. Brush each of the swirls with your beaten egg (or the dairy free milk for a vegan option) and place on your baking tray.
  10. Bake in the oven for between 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Once out the oven, leave to cool whilst you make your icing by combining icing sugar and water until you get the desired consistency.
  12. Drizzle your icing over the swirls and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this easy gluten and dairy free recipe! If you do get chance to make them, I would love to see your photos :).

    • Thank you! 😊 I think you can get a few different types of gluten free puff pastry so hopefully you will be able to find something similar! Xx

  • Hi there! I've just come across your blog and I already love it! I'm also a Coeliac so I love reading posts that are gluten free and that I can try out. Can't wait to read more from you! Xx

  • I've literally just finished making these! Waiting for them to cool down so I can ice them! I found some of the filling melted out but still seems to be a fair bit in, should i have rolled them tighter or does that happen anyway?
Can't wait to try more recipes! Xxx

  • Hey! Some of my filling fell out too, don’t worry! It seems to always happen especially with glutenfree pastry. They still taste great though xxx

  • I just made these yesterday! Mine didn’t come out as pretty as yours but they tasted amazing! I replaced the raisins with dairy free choc buttons because I don’t like raisins at all but it was sooo good! Thanks so much for the recipe x

  • As others too I used choc chips and created vegan cinnamon rolls. The filling melted and I was disappointed yet I read it’s common. Deciding now whether to ice these as they seem sweet enough without. Thank you for providing the recipe
