My gluten free and dairy free guide to Edinburgh

I recently went on a staycation trip to Edinburgh and had such a great experience with finding gluten and dairy free options, I thought I’d share my recommendations with you. This was my first ever trip to Scotland, but certainly not my last – Edinburgh was absolutely beautiful and a place I’d love to visit again. A huge thank you to my Instagram followers for sending me over lots of amazing recommendations prior to going, and a big thank you to @Glutenfreegatherer for the huge list of gluten free places to try.

Note, all of the information in this blog post is correct as of September 2020 however always make sure to double check prior to eating at any of these places in case anything has changed.

Loudons

Loudons is a delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant with tonnes of gluten free, dairy free and vegan options. We ended up going twice because it was so great! I went for the gluten free and vegan pancakes and the smashed avocado & poached eggs on toast.

Located: Fountainbridge: 94b Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 9QA

New Waverley: 2 Sibbald Walk, Edinburgh, EH8 8FT

Sugar Daddies

Sugar Daddies is an entirely gluten free bakery, offering lots of cakes, cookies, sweet treats and some savoury lunch options too! As well as gluten free, they also offer dairy free and vegan options. A must visit if you are in the city!

Located: 8 Roseneath St, Marchmont Edinburgh (Open Wednesday-Sunday)

Mammas American Pizza

Mammas is a family run pizzeria based in the Grassmarket area (which is also great for pubs, restaurants and the castle!). They offer gluten and dairy free pizza bases and vegan cheese too. I went for a veggie option topped with peppers and mushrooms.

Located: 28 The Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2JU

Tapas3

Tapas3 is a relatively new Spanish restaurant and was probably one of my favourite meals from the week. Everything they make is fresh, so they were able to adapt most dishes to be gluten and dairy free. The tapas and sangria were delicious!

Located: 6-8 Howden Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9HL (Open Tuesday-Saturday)

Dishoom

Dishoom is an Indian chain restaurant which I hadn’t visited before, but were great at catering for allergies and served the most delicious food! I went for the gluten and dairy free masala prawns and bonfire spice potatoes.

Located: 3a St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, EH2 2BD

Berties

Bertie’s is a fish and chip shop based on the beautiful Victoria street (which is well worth a visit!). They have a separate fryer for gluten free food and the fish and chips are all dairy free too!

Located: 9 Victoria Street, Edinburgh, EH1 2HE

Chaophraya

Chaophraya is a Thai restaurant which overlooks Edinburgh castle and the Firth of Forth. They offer lots of delicious dishes and cocktails, with gluten free and vegan options. I went for the thai red curry with tofu which was great!

Located: 4th Floor, 33 Castle St, Edinburgh EH2 3DN

We sadly didn’t have the time to visit any more restaurants on our trip, but I did receive lots more recommendations which I will leave below.  They are all on my list for our next visit!

Amarone (Italian)

Located: 13 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh EH2 2AF

Toplobama (Mexican)

Located: 93 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, EH3 9AW

Elephant and Bagels (Bagels)

Located: 37 Marshall Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9BJ

Six by Nico (6 course tasting menu)

Located: 97 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1DJ

Urban Angel Café (Breakfast, brunch and lunch)

Located: 121 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1DJ

GF Cafe

Located: 37 Dairy Road, Edinburgh, EH11 2BU

Yeni (Mediterranean)

Located: 73 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1EE

As well as foodie recommendations, a few other places we enjoyed visiting whilst in Edinburgh were Arthurs Seat, Edinburgh Castle, The Cauldron Wizard Experience, Panda and Sons bar, Victoria Street and Calton Hill.

Hopefully this has been useful if you are planning a trip to Edinburgh, let me know in the comments if you have any other recommendations!

So happy to have found this. Just been to Edinburgh with a friend who can’t have gluten or dairy, so we managed to eat at places that were fine for both of us. She raved about the cakes from Sugar Daddies
